Boolean Search

Boolean search is a sourcing technique that uses logical operators — AND, OR, NOT, and parentheses — to construct precise search queries across recruiting databases, LinkedIn, and job boards. For example, a recruiter searching for a machine learning engineer might use: ("machine learning" OR "deep learning") AND (Python OR PyTorch) NOT "intern".

While boolean search remains a foundational skill for technical recruiters, it has significant limitations in the age of AI recruiting. Boolean queries can only match explicit keywords, missing candidates who have equivalent skills described differently. They also require significant expertise to construct effectively, creating a bottleneck where sourcing quality depends heavily on individual recruiter skill.

AI-powered sourcing platforms are increasingly replacing boolean search with natural language queries and semantic matching, which understand the intent behind a search rather than relying on exact keyword matches. This shift enables recruiters to find relevant candidates faster and with less technical query-building expertise.
